Mary Alice Copp, Painter

I live primarily through my eyes. Painting has intensified my vision and powerfully connected me to the world. Color and pattern are a constant attraction. I see them in faces, buildings, landscapes and the convoluted forms of succulents.

I particularly respond to the decorative use of repetitive patterns in Native American art, African textiles and New Guinean shields. I love that a visual image is part of a universal language, that – like jazz – can be understood without words and speaks across time and distance, reminding us of our shared experience on earth.
