Color
In first grade I was instructed to fill in the
triangle with red , the square with blue, and the rectangle with yellow. Since then, the only thing more interesting than that has been to expand the color range and place the shapes in space. Each painting is a color puzzle, a challenge to work out. I get visceral pleasure from soaking in color. If a color is well placed it enhances all the colors around it. I want the arrangement to move and be visually exciting. The shapes may appear to be flat or three dimensional, to pop out or recede. Every element affects every thing else, it all matters.
As native Americans have woven blankets, New Guineans have made decorated shields, the Amish sewn quilts, Africans made printed fabric, I join the countless number of artists before me who were compelled to work in color and shape, a universal visual language.
